Earlier this year Microsoft, Dell Technologies, Intel and Hesperus partnered with the San CarlosUnified School District, and the San Carlos Apache Tribe to deliver the first Girls Who Game chapteronto a tribal reservation in the United States.
It is a global program that develops science, technology, engineering, andmathematics (STEM) and leadership skills while having fun using the software educational gameapplication Minecraft.
In addition the students learn such skills as computational and critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, problem–solving, and innovation. Students are empowered to becomeleaders in STEM related fields.
The program offers personalized, safe and a supportive community with coaches, mentors, and rolemodels to engage the players and build their self–efficacy and confidence.
The success of the spring program has resulted in several things. The program will be expandinginto the San Carlos High School. Principal Durena Thompson; also a member of the San CarlosTribe, is including Girls Who Game into the digital curriculum they’ve designed and implementedfor the high school.
The San Carlos Intermediate School is also going to integrate its own Girls Who Game program.
The programs at each of the schools will continue to receive the support and assistance fromMicrosoft, Dell Technologies, and Intel throughout the school year.
